Glossary of Terms You Need to Know

Aces Up: To have two pair, one of which is aces in Hold’Em games
Action: Placing money into the pot or amount of money wagered
Add-On: An option in Poker tournaments to buy a specified number of chips at the end of a specified time period.
All-In: To bet all of a player’s chips in a Hold’Em game
Ante: Portion of the minimum bet required to be placed in the pot before the start of a new hand
Avatar: 3-D image that represents a player at an Online Casino
Backdoor: In Hold’Em games, to make a straight or flush by drawing to it on both the Turn and the River
Bad Beat: When a strong hand is beaten by an even stronger hand in Poker
Banker: Player who books the action of other players
Bankroll: Player’s total available money
Basic Strategy: Mathematically correct strategy for lowering the House advantage in Blackjack
Bet: Wager
Betting Limit: Minimum and maximum amount of money that can be wagered on one bet
Bingo Marker: Anything that marks or covers the numbers on a bingo card
Blind Bet: In poker, a forced wager to start the pot
Bluff: Pretend to have a strong hand
Board: As in Texas Hold’Em community cards dealt face up in the center of the table
Boat: Poker full house
Bot: Computer program that plays Casino games online
Bottom Pair: Pair matching the lowest card on the Board with one of a player’s hole cards
Bring-in: In 7-Card Stud, a mandatory bet made by the player with the lowest up card in the first round of betting
Browser Based Software: Online Casino software that doesn’t require the player to download software onto a computer. Player gambles directly on the Online Casino’s server.
Build: Increase the money in a Poker pot by raising, betting or bluffing other players to stay in the game
Bump: To raise
Burn Card: Card temporarily removed from play after the deck has been shuffled
Bust: When the dealer or player has a Blackjack hand that exceeds 21
Button: Disc used in Poker to mark the dealer’s position on the table
Buy-In: To obtain chips to play any Online Casino game. Amount paid to acquire chips to enter a tournament.
Call: Match a bet in Poker in order to keep a hand alive without raising
Caller: The player who calls a bet in Poker. In Bingo, the person who calls the numbers on the Bingo balls.
Capped Pot: A Poker pot that has reached the limit of raising allowed by the House rules
Card Counting: Tracking played cards in Blackjack with the intent of winning based on cards already dealt.
Carny Game: Online Casino game that can’t be beat
Cash Back: Online Casino bonus paid to a player who has lost a certain amount
Cash Out: Withdraw funds from Online Casino
Catch: To make a hand by catching a card or cards on the Flop, Turn or River
Charge: To bet in Poker in order to make other players pay to stay in a pot
Check: To stay in a Poker pot in which no bet is required
Chip Leader: The player with the most chips
Chip Position: The relation a player’s current chip stack has to others at the table
Chips: Discs or tokens representing various amounts of money used in Casino games
Color Up: Exchanging smaller denomination chips for larger ones
Column Bet: Bet on any one of the three columns on a Roulette table, pays 2 to 1
Combination Way Ticket: Groups of numbers in several different combinations on a Keno ticket
Come Bet: Bet in Craps that is like the pass-line bet only it is made after the shooter has made a point
Come-Out Roll: Crapshooter’s first roll before establishing a point or after making a point
Community Cards: In Hold’Em, face up cards on the board that can be used with the players’ hole cards to make a 5-card hand.
Comps: Complimentary freebies (bonuses, gifts) given to the player by the Casino
Coverall: Bingo game in which every square on the card must be covered
Crapping Out: Crapshooter rolls a 2, 3 or 12 on a come-out roll
Croupier: The dealer in Baccarat and Roulette
Cut: Dividing a card deck after the shuffle
Cut Card: A different colored card used to cut a deck
Cut-Off Seat: Seat to the right of the Button in Hold’Em
Deal: Distribution of cards by the dealer
Dealer: Player or House who divvies out cards to participating players
Dealer Button: See Button
Deuce: Two
Die: Six-sided cube with numbered dots on each side (singular of dice)
Double Down: Double a bet and receiving a single new card in Blackjack
Drawing Dead: To draw a hand in Hold’Em with no chance of winning
Draw Out: Beating a player who had a better hand prior to the cards that appeared on the Flop, Turn or River.
Drop Box: Reservoir for chips, cash, markers, etc. on the gaming table
Early Position: Players who must bet first in Hold’Em
Even Money: A bet that pays the same amount as the wager
Face Cards: Any Jack, Queen or King
Family Pot: When all players enter a pot in Poker
Fast Play: Aggressive play
Fifth Street: In Texas Held’Em, the 5th community card on the board. Same as the River.
Final Table: The last table of players remaining in a tournament
First Base: At the Blackjack table, the position on the far left of the dealer
Fish: A novice Poker player
Fishing: Sticking with a poor Poker hand in hopes of getting better cards
Five Card Charlie: Five card winning hand in Pontoon Blackjack
Five Number Line Bet: Roulette bet made on a block of five numbers
Flop: First three cards dealt face up in Hold’Em
Flush: Five cards of a single suit
Fold: When a player drops out of a hand
Four of a Kind: Four identical hands in a single hand
Fourth Street: Fourth community card dealt face up in Hold’Em also called the Turn. Second round of betting 7-Card Stud.
Full House: Three of a kind and a pair
Full Pay: Payout schedule in Video Poker that is considered the best payout schedule
Full Ring Game: Nine or 10-handed game of Hold’Em
Gutshot: Inside straight draw than can only be made on one end
Hand: Action between shuffles or cards a player is holding
Hard Hand: Any hand valued at 11 that does not contain an ace in Blackjack
Heads Up: Betting that occurs only between two players
High-Low Bet: Betting in Roulette on either 1-18 or 19-36. Pays out even money.
High Roller: A player who wages large sums of money
Hit: To request another card in Blackjack
Hold’Em: Poker games where face up community cards are combined with individual players’ cards to form a winning hand
Hole Card: Card dealt face down
Hot: A player who is winning big or a slot machine that is paying off
House: The Casino
House Edge: Percentage of each bet that the House keeps
Inside Bet: A bet placed on any number or combination of numbers in Roulette
Inside Straight: Four cards where only one additional card can complete the series
Insurance: A side bet in Blackjack when the dealer’s face-up card is an ace. Player wins bet if dealer has Blackjack, loses if he doesn’t.
Jackpot: Slot machine maximum payout
Keno Board: Electronic board that posts winning Keno numbers
Kicker: A high card that doesn’t contribute to a straight or flush
Late Position: Last players to bet on a round in Hold’Em
Limp In: To enter the post on the first betting with the minimum bet allowed
Line Bet: Even money bet in Craps
Load Up: Playing the maximum number of coins in Slot Machine or Video Poker
Loose: Slot machines that pay off well or consistently
Loss Rebate: Online Casino comp of some kind to a player who has lost money
